Business
a) Rent for the ponds: the ponds are 21(100m*40m). The owners are willing to release any number of the total for the project. Also, they even prefer that to hold share in the project than taking an amount which can be put into the project to make it a success. In times of cash, they said the 100m*40m pond will not be cost more than GH¢100.00/year.
b) Protection from predators: there are no known bird predators. A night security man will be hired to check human predation.
Production ( of 4,000m2 pond).
a) 16,000 Fingerlings(5g) will be stocked, thus 4 fingerlings/ m2 . Unit cost of fingerling @ GH¢ 0.070. Total cost GH¢ 1,120.00
b) Feeding for the 180 days
1st 60 days @ 10% of the fish biomass - 19 bags @ GH¢25.00 = GH¢ 475.00
At the end of the 60 days, weight of each fish= 80 g
Last 120 days @ 4% of the fish biomass- 240 bags@ GH¢25.00= GH¢ 6,000.00
C) Hiring of Labour (1 farm worker & 1 security man :1st 6months)= GH¢600.00
D) Land preparation and filling of pond= GH¢ 400.00
E) Fuel for Monitoring and supervision = GH¢ 700.00
Grand expenses for a 4,000m2 pond = GH¢ 1,120+ 475+ 6,000+600+400+700
= GH¢ 9,295.00
Prospects
Marketing; A) Local: hotels and Restaurents
B) Foreign: there are contacts to export to the EU countries.
Mortality: 500 fish
Survival :15,500 fish. At the 180th day, weight/fish=250g.
Total weight of fish at harvest=15,500*250g=3,875kg
Price of 1kg of fresh tilapia GH¢4.00*3,875= GH¢ 15,500.00
Profit= GH¢ 15,500- GH¢9,295= GH¢ 6,205.00
% profit= GH¢6,205/ GH¢9,295*100% = 67%
